Solving the Mysteries of the Moon's Magnetic Regions

The Vector Magnetometer-Rover (VMR) will track magnetic anomalies on the moon's surface as part of the APL's Lunar Vertex science investigation.

Perched atop the rover element of NASA’s Lunar Vertex lander-rover project, the Vector Magnetometer-Rover (VMR) includes an array of miniature fluxgate magnetometers that will track the geometry and intensity of the magnetic field on the surface of Reiner Gamma -- the most famous of the Moon’s so-called magnetic "swirls." In tandem with another APL instrument, the Vector Magnetometer-Lander, VMR will help scientists answer questions about the origins of Reiner Gamma's magnetic properties.
