I received my Ph.D. in Planetary Astronomy from the University of Arizona in 1997. At the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, my research centers on the study of of asteroids for scientific and planetary defense purposes. I am Investigation Lead for the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), NASA's first planetary defense test mission. DART launched in November 2021 and will crash into Dimorphos, a moonlet of the asteroid Didymos, in September 2022. As Investigation Lead, my role is helping to make sure the larger team takes and analyzes the right data to meet the mission requirements given by NASA.  My scientific research has focused on those asteroids that have evidence of water or organic materials in them, detectable in their infrared reflectance spectrum. This pursuit has led to studies of asteroids from 1996 FG3, a near-Earth asteroid on which clay minerals have been found, to 24 Themis, an asteroid in the outer belt on which water ice has been discovered -- a first among asteroids. I have particular interest in the dwarf planet Ceres, and other large objects like Ceres  and Themis.
