I investigate how the solar system formed and changes through time and help develop spacecraft missions that address pressing questions in planetary science. My work includes laboratory experiments, computer models, and spacecraft data analysis. I focus on fundamental processes such as impact cratering, an approach that allows me to tackle problems on a range of objects in the solar system. I contribute to efforts to defend Earth against the hazards posed by asteroids and comets. I am the Deputy Instrument Scientist for the camera, called DRACO, that will fly on NASA’s first planetary defense mission, DART. I am also part of the Small Body Mapping Tool (SBMT) development team. The SBMT is a 3D data visualization and analysis tool developed at APL that is used by researchers around the world. I publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and regularly present at international conferences, including invited talks at meetings such as the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. I am the Principal Investigator for multiple NASA-funded grants. Education and outreach are vital parts of my professional identity, and I regularly mentor high-school students through APL’s ASPIRE program and volunteer to support other STEM outreach activities.
