I have been active in atmospheric science since 1995 and have broad research experience in modeling/analysis, technology development, space mission development, field measurement, and laboratory experimentation. In recent years I have been the Principal Investigator for the Radiometer Assessment using Vertically Aligned Nanotubes (RAVAN): a CubeSat pathfinder to measure Earth’s energy budget, launched in 2016; and the Compact Hyperspectral Air Pollution Sensor (CHAPS): an instrument development project to build and test a compact space instrument for the remote sensing of atmospheric pollution. Both projects were funded by NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office. I am also a long-time member of the NASA Aura/Ozone Monitoring Instrument NO2 retrieval team.

RAVAN demonstrated the first-ever use of carbon nanotubes as a radiometer absorber in space—a technology that has now been adopted in several solar and Earth energy budget space missions—and gallium phase-change calibration cells. CHAPS, which is currently in its development phase, will use freeform optics and additive manufacturing to achieve science-quality performance in a smallsat-sized form factor.
