Yongliang Zhang received his Ph.D from the University of Saskatchewan in 1996 in Space Physics. He began his post-doctoral work at Kyoto University in 1995 and University of Saskatchewan in 1998 where he focused on wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere, analysis of whistler mode waves observed by GEOTAIL and polar auroras from ground and DMSP particle observations. In 2000 he joined JHU/APL where he worked on various auroras (detached, cusp, polar arc, polar rain, and ring current auroras), response of the thermosphere and ionosphere (such as depletion of O/N2 ratio, Nitric Oxide enhancement, ionospheric disturbance) to magnetic storms by using data from  IMAGE/FUV, TIMED/GUVI, DMSP/SSUSI, and DMSP particle data. He also developed an empirical global auroral model of electron energy flux and mean energy. He discovered that the spatial structure in polar rain electrons could be due to high latitude magnetopause surface waves. He authored and co-auhtored more than 100 papers (2017-present papers are not included yet) in aurora, thermospehre and ionosphere studies. He edited a book “Auroral Dynamics and Space Weather” in 2015.
